1 Choose the right supplies

The Italian National Institute of Health recommends using a combination of soap and water to kill surface bacteria and viruses. Another alternative is using ethyl alcohol to sterilise frequently used home surfaces – ensure that it is over 75 per cent purity for maximum sparkle!

2 Sanitising clothes and home textiles

Wash your clothes at a temperature of at least 60 °C to remove bacteria and stains, especially if you have been in a crowded area. When deep cleaning your mattress and sofa, use a vacuum cleaner. Don’t forget to check the seams and crevices for hidden dirt and dust!

3 Beware of germs

Commonly touched items in our homes such as door handles, remote controls and light switches are breeding grounds for bacteria. In the kitchen, microbes thrive on dish sponges and cutting boards. Make sure to keep these surfaces clean, using a damp cloth or paper towel.

4 Don’t forget smartphones, tablets and other devices!

According to a study, we touch our smartphones over 2,600 times per day and scientists at the University of Arizona have found that our phones carry 10 times more bacteria than the average toilet seat. Make sure you disinfect your devices by spraying a mild cleaning agent on a microfiber cloth and wiping the front screen as well as the back.

5 Ventilate with fresh air

We can improve indoor air quality by opening doors and windows, helping to reduce airborne bacteria and viruses. If you live in a polluted city, choose the best time to open your doors and windows avoiding traffic fumes from entering your home.

6 Finally…don’t overdo it!

Is cleaning too much a bad thing? Yes, overusing cleaning supplies can damage furniture, carpets, windows and even our health. Make sure you are using the proper cleaning agents for the intended surfaces. Also bear in mind that applying generous amounts of cleaning products does not equate to a cleaner surface.
