MANAGING THE NEW WORK-LIFE BALANCE FROM HOME
Friday 05 March 2021
Here are three ideas to help achieve a healthy work-life balance.
With the COVID-19 pandemic, people around the world have had to transition to working from home, and are likely to continue to do so for some time. It is challenging to balance work and home-life, which now frequently blur into one, especially for those with children and families.
1. Speak to your managers
It may not always be easy to discuss personal challenges with your line manager, but it is worth remembering they have a duty of care towards you. As families juggle home-schooling with their own work it is important that working hours are flexible. Discuss with your manager time management tools like to-do lists to help prevent work spilling into personal time.
2. Set physical boundaries
As our homes are now also our workplaces, it can be hard to fully switch off at the end of the day. If you can, try to set up your home office in an area dedicated to work, away from communal family areas. If you cannot do this, make a clear distinction between the working day and after-work time. It can be as simple as physically packing away your work things to mark the official end of the working day.
3. Make room for “me” time
This is easier said than done, and so, it is important to establish boundaries. Prioritise a weekly relaxation or self-care activity — taking care of yourself will help you function at your best. Try setting aside some time for a leisure activity you enjoy like an on-line exercise class, reading a book or watching films.
