The Filarmonica della Scala Plays for Children

The 2012 La Filarmonica della Scala incontra la città Open Rehearsal Series

The Filarmonica della Scala and UniCredit, its main partner, in collaboration with the UniCredit Foundation, presents the third edition of La Filarmonica della Scala incontra la città (The Filarmonica della Scala Meets the City), an open rehearsal series dedicated to the city of Milan and four local non-profit organizations.

As part of this unique initiative, five legendary conductors will direct five open rehearsals at the Teatro della Scala.  Similar to previous years, the conductor or a musicologist will begin each rehearsal by introducing the music that will be performed.  Admission to the first rehearsal will be free of charge for Milanese, while proceeds from the remaining four will be donated to four local non-profit organizations committed to children's issues: the Ospedale dei Bambini Milano - Buzzi; CasAmica Onlus; Bambini Senza Sbarre; and COMIN, la cooperativa sociale di solidarietà.  Through this initiative, the Filarmonica and UniCredit aim to generate public awareness of children's issues, and give greater visibility to these four organizations and their important services.  Aragorn Communications is the organizer of this year's series.

The Filarmonica has been an active supporter of philanthropic causes since 1984, when it hosted a concert conducted by Leonard Bernstein for Amnesty International.  The La Filarmonica della Scala incontra la città initiative was launched for its 2009-2010 season, with UniCredit and UniCredit Foundation's support.  Since then, more than 20,000 visitors have attended the open rehearsal series, which have featured such non-profit organizations as: Fondazione Don Carlo Gnocchi; Arché; Fondazione Casa della Carità Angelo Abriani; Fondazione Floriani; Comunità Nuova; Vidas; Centro Socio Ricreativo "Ercole Ratti;" Scuola Italiana di Senologia; and Opera San Francesco per i Poveri.

Cultural institutions and non-profit organizations are facing challenging times due to the global economic crisis.  However, the Filarmonica della Scala, together with UniCredit and the UniCredit Foundation, has renewed its commitment to the city of Milan by continuing the La Filarmonica della Scala incontra la città initiative, which is becoming a new tradition among Milanese.  Research conducted by Renato Mannheimer at the Institute of Social and Political Opinion (ISPO) showed that 43 percent of Milanese are familiar with the open rehearsal series, while more than 90 percent appreciate its value.

The 2012 ticket prices are lower than previous years and range from 5 to 35 in order to make music and the La Scala experience accessible to all audiences, all while supporting vital non-profit organizations and their services dedicated to children's issues.
