UniCredit brings Apple Pay to Customers in Italy

Offering an Easy, Secure & Private Way to Pay

UniCredit announces that Apple Pay is now available for its Italian customers. Apple Pay is transforming mobile payments with an easy, secure and private way to pay which is fast and convenient.

UniCredit is the first bank in Italy to offer Apple Pay to its 6 million card holder customers [1], making it possible for all types of UniCredit cards, credit, prepaid and debit cards, to pay with Apple Pay in shops, through apps and online.

To pay with Apple Pay, UniCredit customers only need to have a UniCredit card, an iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch or MacBook in Safari, and to activate App MonHey from the UniCredit Mobile Banking and add cards to Wallet.

Apple Pay can be used by UniCredit cardholders in all the Italian terminal readers that support contactless payment or anywhere in the world where contactless payments are accepted. UniCredit customers can pay with Apple Pay:

·       with their touch, by holding their iPhone near the contactless POS reader with finger on Touch ID;

·       through Apple Watch by simply double-clicking on the side button and holding Apple Watch up to the reader or;

·       to pay online in apps and on websites accepting Apple Pay by selecting Apple Pay as the payment method during the check out, and place the finger on Touch ID.

Offering Apple Pay represents an important step in UniCredit's focus on innovation and digitalization, part of transforming the business model which is a key pillar of the strategic plan Transform 2019, with the purpose of improving the customer experience and reinforcing the banking relationship with customers. With Apple Pay integrated, customers benefit from a secure, fast and simple payment solution.

Security and privacy is at the core of Apple Pay. When customers use a credit or debit card with Apple Pay, the actual card numbers are not stored on the device, nor on Apple servers. Instead, a unique Device Account Number is assigned, encrypted and securely stored in the Secure Element on their device. Each transaction is authorized with a one-time unique dynamic security code.

"We are excited to bring Apple Pay to our customers in Italy from the very first day of its Italian launch. Apple Pay is one of the most relevant technological innovations and widespread payment systems. UniCredit continuously strive to provide our customers with solutions that make their financial lives easier and Apple Pay does exactly this by offering an easy, fast and secure payments system." - said Gianni Franco Papa, General Manager of UniCredit "In an increasingly digital world, where UniCredit today in Italy alone has around 3 million online clients, 1.5 million mobile clients, and a significant annual growth of 60% of remote sales, offering Apple Pay to cardholders in Italy is in line with our commitment to innovation and digitalization. This will benefit our customers and ultimately allow us to maximize business performance, generating value for our customers, for our shareholders and for our colleagues".

Apple Pay is easy to set up and users will continue to receive all the rewards and benefits offered by credit and debit cards. In stores, Apple Pay works with iPhone SE, iPhone 6 and later, and with Apple Watch.

Online shopping in apps and on websites accepting Apple Pay is as simple as the touch of a finger with Touch ID, with no need to manually fill out lengthy account forms or repeatedly type in shipping and billing information. When paying for goods and services on the go in apps or Safari, Apple Pay works with iPhone 6 and later, iPhone SE, iPad Pro, iPad Air 2, and iPad mini 3 and later. Customers can also use Apple Pay in Safari on any Mac introduced in or after 2012 running macOS Sierra and confirm the payment with iPhone 6 or later or Apple Watch, or with Touch ID on the new MacBook Pro.
