Bringing positive social change in Southern Italy
Monday 10 October 2022
With the increasing disparities between regions in Italy triggered by the current economic situation, synergies between the public, private and nonprofit sectors are of crucial importance. This is why UniCredit and the UniCredit Foundation have joined forces, together with the Third Sector, to boost growth in Southern Italy.
In the current economic scenario, the Third Sector has become more critical than ever for Italy and especially for the Southern part of the country, where it is particularly active, with 99 thousand nonprofit institutions (27% of the national total), employing 168 thousand employees (20% of national rate).*
With its historical and deeply-rooted presence throughout Italy, UniCredit has always been committed to supporting the communities in which it operates, and to bringing positive social change.
This commitment was echoed during a dedicated event “Insieme, Possiamo. Le sfide del Mezzogiorno” (“Together, We Can. The challenges of the Mezzogiorno area”) held in Naples on 5 October. Andrea Orcel, UniCredit’s Group CEO, discussed the collaboration UniCredit and the UniCredit Foundation have with the public institutions and the Third Sector for the economic and social growth of Southern Italy. A special focus was placed on Banco Alimentare, which received a donation of 510,000 euros from the UniCredit Foundation.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, the UniCredit Foundation has taken concrete actions to fight food poverty across Italy and to support organisations involved in the distribution of food to all those in need throughout the Country. To date the Foundation has donated 5.1 million euros, the equivalent of 3.8 million meals, to 69 nonprofit organisations.
Together with its Foundation, UniCredit would like to continue this important path, enhancing the collaboration between the public, private and non-profit sectors to create employment and retain and develop talent.

"Two difficult years of the pandemic coupled with the current economic environment are likely to exacerbate situations of distress in the country. At UniCredit, we believe we have a social responsibility that goes far beyond financing. Our goal is to respond to the needs of the communities that we serve and that most need our help. The partnership with the Third Sector represents a fundamental commitment to deliver on our purpose and support those in need”, our Group CEO, Andrea Orcel commented.
