Italy’s Davis Cup success highlighted a season of triumphs for the team, led by world No. 1 Jannik Sinner. Matteo Berrettini set the tone in the final by defeating Botic van de Zandschulp 6-4, 6-2. Despite the Netherlands' historic run, Berrettini’s power and precision overwhelmed his opponent. His win marked a personal milestone after missing last year’s title run due to injury.
Sinner, riding high after clinching major titles including the Australian Open and US Open, delivered a decisive performance against Tallon Griekspoor. In a 7-6(2), 6-2 win, Sinner showcased tactical brilliance, saving crucial break points and accelerating when it mattered most. This victory capped a stellar 2024 for the 23-year-old, who ended the season with a 73-6 record, the best since Andy Murray in 2016.
Italy’s team effort stood out, with contributions from Lorenzo Musetti, Simone Bolelli, and Andrea Vavassori in earlier stages of the competition. The team’s success was guided by captain Filippo Volandri, who lauded their commitment and drive. Volandri emphasized the historical significance of their back-to-back wins, a feat not achieved since Czechia in 2013.
The Netherlands, despite defeat, celebrated their best Davis Cup result in history. Their journey included a memorable quarter-final victory over Spain, where they ended Rafael Nadal’s storied career and secured Wesley Koolhof’s final professional doubles win.
