SUMMER ACTIVITIES IN YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD
Wednesday 08 July 2020
Summer is the perfect season to spend time with your children – and it’s just around the corner. It is important to encourage kids to get out and enjoy the outdoors while the weather is nice! Here are five ideas to help you do your very own summer camp for your kids
1 Plan a picnic
Whether at a local park or in your backyard, enjoy time as a family with an outdoor lunch. Picnics can be a peaceful environment, allowing you to focus on the little ones without distraction. Time spent in the sunshine can also improve your mood and reduce stress levels. Consider a little family competition by playing board games in the open air to help your family bond. Picnics are the perfect opportunity to make your kids feel special!
2 Bike riding
Go for a fun bike ride, either near your house or on a dedicated cycle trail. If it’s a hot summer’s day, remember to bring plenty of water to hydrate! Cycling keeps kids and adults active! Some children spend a lot of their time at home in front of the TV or playing video games, so introduce cycling as a wholesome alternative to their lifestyle: it’s a fun way to keep healthy while feeling free.
3 Stargazing
Grab a few blankets and lay them out in the backyard or park and gaze up at the stars. Challenge your family to name different constellations, or even try making your own up! Half of the fun of stargazing is seeing how your kids cultivate a sense of curiosity about the world around them. Make sure you have everything you need to be warm and comfortable as you settle down for the night!
4 Fly a kite
Choose an open space to run and fly kites with your kids. It’s a classic activity that’s perfect for bonding and spending time together. Finally, remember that learning how to fly a kite can take several attempts – you and your kids will need a great deal of patience!
5 Go to the farmers’ market
Support local businesses and show your family how many beautiful vegetables and colourful fruits can be found just down the road. Farmers’ markets are full of fresh products at the peak of the growing season and are also child-friendly. Let your ‘little clients’ browse and pick out something new to try. Then, ask them to help you prepare a meal or choose a snack based on what caught their eye!
